چکیده

The use of Langmuir probes for measuring plasma density is subject to uncertainty because the theories commonly used to interpret the data give widely differing results. This is especially troublesome in partially ionized plasmas used, for instance, in the semiconductor industry, since no existing theory adequately treats the case when there are a few collisions between ions and neutral atoms. In this work, plasma densities measured by microwave interferometry and plasma-oscillation probes are compared with those from probe data analyzed with Langmuir’s orbital motion limited (OML) theory, the Allen–Boyd–Reynolds (ABR) theory and the Bernstein–Rabinowitz–Laframboise (BRL) theory. It is found that ABR underestimates and BRL overestimates the density, the problems being the neglect of ion orbiting in ABR and the effect of ion-neutral collisions in BRL. The best theory is either OML or the geometric mean between the ABR and BRL results. For thicker probes, other methods are suggested. (Some figures may appear in colour only in the online journal)

Electron heating and density production in microwave-assisted helicon plasmas

Microwaves are injected into argon and helium helicon plasmas at 6 to 20 mTorr neutral pressure, 1.2 kW pulsed microwave power, up to 500 W continuous RF power, and up to 1 kG magnetic fields, with the objective of heating the tail of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) and populating ion metastable states. Langmuir probes are used to measure the EEDF and optical emission spectrosc...

The fixed-bias Langmuir probe on the Communication/Navigation Outage Forecast System satellite: calibration and validation.

A fixed-bias spherical Langmuir probe is included as part of the Vector Electric Field Instrument (VEFI) suite on the Communication/Navigation Outage Forecast System (C/NOFS) satellite. C/NOFS gathers data in the equatorial ionosphere between 400 and 860 km, where the primary constituent ions are H(+) and O(+). The ion current collected by the probe surface per unit plasma density is found to b...
